Screening as part of Black History Month – Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975

Wednesday, October 16, 2013 7:30pm

Bringing the history of the Black Power Movement to a new generation, through the eyes of Swedish filmmakers at the time, filmmaker Göran Hugo Olsson crafts a stunning cinematic/musical exploration of America and the Black Power Movement, from the period 1967-1975.

Combining significant 16mm footage (that was lying undiscovered in the cellar at Swedish Television for 30 years) with contemporary audio interviews from leading African-American artists, activists, musicians and scholars, and shaped by an award-winning soundtrack including artists Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, Om’Mas Keith, and The Roots, this documentary encompasses so much more than a political history. And yet, organically it succeeds in asking its audience to consider deep questions about America today.

The film will be introduced by the poet and novelist Dr Kei Miller

The Glad Cafe, 1006a Pollokshaws Road, Shawlands.
