Telling Tales

Fairy tales are one of our first introductions to the world around us, but too often these tales portray women in a negative way. Telling Tales is a chance to get together with other women to talk about what our stories mean to us and to discuss what we would like to tell children about the world around them.

The Dalit Women of India

Wednesday 9 March, 6pm (Free)
Beryl De Souza works in India on behalf of Dalit women who want action which makes a real difference. This event is an opportunity to hear from Beryl about the on-the-ground projects geared to preventing Dalit women being trafficked and how to help to bring about community transformation.

Cinema Feminista Saturday Matinee – I for India

As part of our Cinema Feminista Programme GWL are screening this fabulous documentary from director Sandhya Suri that chronicles her father’s emigration from India to England in the mid-1960s.

Our Space – Play, Music and Dance

Sunday 27 March, 10am (£3/free)
This project takes place in the natural environment at Chatelherault Country Park, Hamilton ML3 7UE, exploring and connecting with Scotland’s natural heritage. Through theme based conversations across generations of migrant families, we make links between nature, homelands and heritage.

Women Make History Workshop 2 – Gems from the GWL Archiv

Thursday 7 April, 6pm (£3/free)
In the 1970s and 80s a group of artists from Slade School of Art came together to produce posters for different causes, including promoting women’s history. Come and hear the Collective’s story and be inspired by the posters from GWL’s archives.

Women Make History Workshop 3 – Bottled Tears

Thursday 5 May, 6pm (£3/free)
Explore “one of the strangest migrations in modern history” (BBC). Following World War Two, tens of thousands of war brides made one-way voyages to their husbands’ distant homelands. In a spellbinding presentation Beverley Tosh will tell the tales of seven lasses who came of age in wartime Scotland then found themselves transplanted from Newfoundland to New Zealand.
