Weddings in Glasgow have never been more popular and more and more I receive emails asking for suggestions and advice from people, who are planning to get married in our city.
Sometimes people living overseas are planning to come to Scotland to get married and they are looking for information about wedding venues, churches, florists, restaurants, wedding cakes, caterers and hotels.
However, many of the queries are from people closer to hand; brides and grooms looking for a piper, a band, suggestions for hen parties, stag parties and the best place to buy that wedding dress – so I thought I would try to pull some of this information together and create an online facility; making it easier for people planning weddings in Glasgow.
I’ve had a little bit of experience of wedding planning – in particular planning a wedding on a small budget – because when Jim and I got married in 1991 we did not have two pennies to rub together. However, that did not stop us having a wonderful day – with the help of some of our friends. Perhaps not a typical West End Wedding but memorable nonetheless. Particularly wonderful was the ceremony, which took place in Glasgow University Chapel, a fabulous setting with its romantic Gothic architecture.
The chapel was designed by Sir John Burnett and was first dedicated for worship on the 4th October, 1929. University graduates (either bride or groom), current students, members of staff or the son or daughter of a current member of staff can be married in this fabulous historic building. Scotland has become an increasingly popular wedding destination – with Madonna and Guy Ritchie’s celebration at Skibo Castle in Sutherland but there is no need to trek up to the Highlands to find a fabulous venue. Glasgow is awash with wonderful and historical locations.
For a fabulous Townhouse Wedding in the West End you might want to think about Hotel du Vin at One Devonshire – voted one of the ‘Five Top Hotels for Weddings in the UK’ by Conde Nast Brides. Another wonderful location is the Queens Cross Church, the only church designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, it is a dramatic and atmospheric building with its glorious stained glass and high vaulted ceilings. Attached is a small church hall – perfect for a small function or champagne reception; also designed by Mackintosh it is simple yet striking.
Arrangements for weddings at Queens Cross Church can be made through the Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society, which is based there. 870 Garscube Road, Glasgow G20 7EL

A good way to have a fun week-end and investigate possible locations for your wedding ceremony, or celebration, is to visit some of the city’s great buildings during Doors Open. Not only will you be able to see some of the most wonderful churches – of all demoninations – you will also be able to visit many of the fabulous locations, where Marriages and Civil Ceremonies can be conducted.
Approved Venues for Marriages and Civil Ceremonies in Glasgow
There are some absolutely fabulous venues now approved for marriages to be conducted so if you don’t have a local Church and favourite Pastor then you can choose from an ever increasing choice of venues. You may also decide to hold the reception in the same location – making planning that bit easier.
Some of my own favourites venues include:
- OranMor, where The Auditorium makes a wonderful setting, with Alasdair Gray’s fantastic ceiling mural is the crowning glory.
- Saint Andrew’s in the Square – where we had a great time at my niece Danielle Young and groom, Ciaran O’Neill, held their reception. Brilliant for ceilidhs.
- Also great for a large function is Gilmorehill at Glasgow University, where we celebrated Chris McAllister’s marriage to Pearse McCusker – our first same sex wedding. It was fab!
- One Devonshire Gardens would make another super location
- And for something different you could invite your guests aboard The Ferry at Anderston Quay
