Bob Law: photographer, walker and writer.

My name is Bob Law and I was born in Glasgow in 1956 on the south side but now live in the west end. I’ve been an active hill walker, rock climber, Scottish Island bagger, keen amateur photographer, and explorer for many years, both in Scotland and Europe. I still live in Glasgow and have a popular blog Alex and Bob’s Blue Sky Scotland so feel free to drop in.

Bob Law: Glasgow In Colour

Glasgow Waterfront Lights. City Centre View

Humans have decorated where they live since they inhabited caves and painted the walls and the roof above them with their fingers. Modern towns and cities are much the same today and can be very colourful places.  As a keen amateur photographer I like to try and capture that vibrant colour and it’s a good […]

Bob Law: blog and photographs – Millport and Great Cumbrae

The Waterfront. Millport Walk

The Magic Kingdom As it was a lovely March weekend I went over to the island of Great Cumbrae to visit the seaside town of Millport.  Driving down to Largs I wondered if there would be any snow on the mountains of Arran and this proved to be the case when I parked for free […]

Bob Law: Old Glasgow and the Necropolis

Glasgow Necropolis

Having lived all my life on the south side or west end of Glasgow I had never entered the Royal Infirmary until a few weeks ago. The original building on this site dates back to the early 1700s – it was replaced by the current building in 1914. Monumental in size and scale, it dominates […]

Bob Law’s blog and photography: Public Art in Scotland

Science Park. Sculpture Maryhill Road

In recent decades public art in Scotland has had a big impact with many examples catching the imagination and media attention, none more so than Andy Scott’s Kelpies – the massive horse head profiles dominating the Forth and Clyde canal entrance near Falkirk. As I travel around Scotland on free weekends ‘collecting’ hills, visiting interesting […]

Bob Law: Glasgow West End Wildlife and thoughts on Climate Change

Fox Cub.Glasgow

Glasgow is a lucky city in that it still has abundant wildlife living within the urban area. The West End of Glasgow, as one of the more affluent districts, filled with ponds, meadows and woodlands – both natural features and man-made, attracts a range of creatures who also find a living here. This is just […]

Bob Law: The Land of the Dripping Sun

Nightfall. The Swan Pond

November just past was one of the dullest months on record and so far December has been very wet and dark. In Glasgow we have not had the devastating floods experienced in Cumbria or other places but there has  still has been a deluge of steady rain day after day. Here are some of my […]

Bob Law: The Winter Wonders of Oban

Kayakers. Loch Etive and Glen Etive

The Scottish Western Highlands, with a scattered population, can sometimes seem cold, barren and rather bleak in November with endless days of rain, mist covered mountains and little obvious nightlife. The busy sea port of Oban bucks that trend however with ferries travelling from the mainland to various offshore islands, and the town, which lies […]

Autumn in West Glasgow: The Seasons In Colour by Bob Law

It has been a magical month and a half of fine weather over the UK. Sunny days, cold nights, sometimes beautiful sunsets. The autumn colours have lasted this year thanks to light winds. Now the ‘grey time’ begins during November – skeleton trees stripped of leaf and life stand desolate… fallen and faded colours clog […]

An Indian Summer that will live long in the memory – Bob Law

Scotland is a fickle country. It’s taken me several decades to work out that we only get one good summer in four… yet every year we always look forward to a long hot summer in Scotland, conveniently forgetting that past weather records are not in our favour, as we stick out into the Atlantic Ocean […]

Bob Law – walking in Skye: The Storr – Hartaval –Trotternish Ridge

Alex Under the Storr Pinnacles. Skye

In the hill-walking and climbing world many people get fixated with the wonders of the Black Cuillin Ridge on the Island of Skye and return again and again to these iconic Scottish western seaboard peaks, climbing them year after year.  I was no different. It took over 20 years before I could release myself from […]

Bob Law: walking in the Scottish Borders – Peebles.

An easy, but beautiful, walk near Peebles The border town of Peebles is already a firm destination for day trippers from the central belt with its high street of local shops, riverside strolls along the grassy banks of the Tweed, and rolling country landscapes. Just over an hour’s drive from Glasgow, less from Edinburgh, the […]

Lake District: High and Mighty – Bob Law

It’s only two hours in the car, at an easy pace, from Glasgow to the edge of the English Lake District. Nonetheless, for many Scottish walkers it’s a mountain area they avoid, put off by tourist numbers, high parking charges and a misconceived attitude that the Lakes are not as adventurous somehow, compared to […]

Persephone in Colour– June Blog from Bob Law

The Cream Season

Every year it has occurred since the first Dawn. Persephone has never failed to rise from that grey underworld, bringing her gifts of spring. The “Great Green” that sweeps the land. The rainbow of colours. “There are Patterns in Nature, everywhere”, if you have eyes to see them. First comes Crocus Lawn… then Bluebell Forest…then […]
