owen bisset fused glass ring Owen Bisset’s wonderful glass jewellery can be found in his beautiful gift boutique in Partick. The attractive shop with its stunning range of well priced and carefully selected jewellery, gifts and home accessories is well situated in this vibrant part of the West End.

The shop looks amazing and has a very friendly atmosphere just crying out for a very enjoyable browse. I spent a wonderful half hour having a look around but that wasn’t enough, when I got the opportunity I popped back in later in the day.

I challenge anyone to leave empty handed – I bought some wonderful, emerald green and turquoise glass earrings designed by Owen and have my eye on the very stylish long chain necklaces in lovely summer hues.

It’s uplifting to see bright and beautiful businesses thriving in Glasgow’s West End. The Bead Company certainly falls into this category. With an incredible array of products presented in a fabulous setting, together with a very innovative approach it’s a gem.

My good friend, Roy Beers, writing about The Bead Company recently in The Herald Magazine sums it up very well when he says that it’s: “no ordinary arts and crafts store”.

I am a freelance jewellery designer and sell to a number of shops in the UK and am my designs are proving particularly popular. I make absolutely unique jewellery using 14th century African trading beads. These beads were originally made in Murano, and were used extensively in West African to trade for slaves, ivory, gold and spices. All the pieces are handmade and as well as being fair-trade, 10% of all profits are donated to a children's orphanage in Nigeria. St. Theresas orphanage is home to around 60 children at any given time, 90% of which are HIV positive. Money raised is used to not only to feed these children, but to provide books for their education. I am struggling to find independent shops in Glasgow - my jewellery ranges from about 20 pounds to 70 pounds and is really very unique. If anybody can either reccommend any shops that may be interested in displaying and selling my work, or would like to look at any of my jewellery, please get back to me via email. Many thanks, Olivia Halvorsen.
