A tale so strange it has to be true.
Mon 26, Tue 27 & Thu 29 September
Running time: 1h38m
In the mid-1970s, Kim Jong-il decided that North Korea’s film industry should make films that connected with his people emotionally. As such, he turned his attention to South Korea’s most celebrated actor/director couple – Choi Eun-hee and Shin Sang-ok – kidnapping them in order to have them create films for his regime. Unbeknownst to him, the couple had since split and Shin’s booming film studio had fallen into financial ruin. What follows is a baffling true story of romance, politics and filmmaking, with interviews and smuggled audio recordings of Kim Jong-il peppering the archive footage to uncover a tale so strange it has to be true.
