This talk traces the development of Glasgow’s New Town, an area now known as the Merchant City. Tobacco lords, sugar princes and slave-owners influenced the development of the burgeoning city, including urban layout and architectural design in large Palladian mansions. This talk also examines the merchants’ landed estates located around areas of greater Glasgow.
