Antique Lace

Added on Sunday 6 Mar 2011

I've been helping my mum out at her home of late and the other afternoon we spent cleaning out old cupboards and we found some very old linen tablecloths and lace doylies.

We did consider freshening them up with a quick coolish cycle in the washing machine but some of them were just too delicate.

Sunlight is a great way of freshening things up and of course its free and now that Spring has sprung we should at least be guaranteed a few more sun filled days.

Simply lay your old lace, curtains and other fine linens in the sun for a few hours. Really dirty pieces can be dampened first with cold water.

If that doesn't do the trick, fill a pot with water and bring to a boil, drop in linens and let them steep until all of the grubby stains lift.

If you have stubborn stains, try spraying them with peroxide, then rinsing with water. Lemon juice also has the same bleaching effect!

Great tips if you've old antiquey lace things and especially, if like me you love second hand or vintage bits and bobs!!
