Guide to Hyndland, Glasgow West End

Civilization is well demonstrated in Hyndland with its stately Edwardian tenements, leafy terraces and private gardens. Stretching North from Partick the houses and setting grow grander and here you will find one of Glasgow’s most desirable residential areas. The area is historically very interesting and only 100 years ago was mainly farmland now the wonderful architecture is one of Hyndland’s main attractions. Apart from the beautiful homes, the area has some impressive churches with wonderful stained glass windows.

It is worth walking from Hyndland towards Byres Road through the back streets of Dowanhill. There is a lot of historical interest in this area including the Willow Bank Bowling Club, in a lovely spot surrounded by fine town houses, it is reputed to be Glasgow’s first Bowling Club. The part of Great Western Road, which skirts the northern end of Hyndland, is also very attractive with its stately terraces and mature trees. Here you can find a fine example of the work of Alexander (Greek) Thomson at Great Western Terrace.

Theatre, coffee, shopping

Amongst the other attractions of Hyndland are the Cottier Theatre (previously the Dowanhill Church) – a popular venue offering a wide range of entertainment and South American food. Jazz on Sunday is very popular. Just behind Cottiers on Hyndland Road you can find the large and very popular pub The Rock.

On Hyndland Road you will spot Jellyhill, a lovely cafe bistro with lots of home baking, wonderful sandwiches and a very friendly ambience.

For those interested in designer shopping Hyndland Road has a number of small but stylish boutiques selling womens’ clothing and accessories. Brenda Muir is particularly stylish and Solo is also very fashionable. On the same stretch you will find Bookpoint, which has a fine selection of Scottish Books and also books about Glasgow’s West End such as: Hyndland, Edwardian Glasgow Tenement Suburb, Anne Laird. 1997 and publications by Glasgow Western Conservation Trust.

Peckham’s (a Glasgow based deli chain) with a delightful array of produce, has moved to Hyndland Road, to a much larger shop.
