Bob Law’s Blog: The Wonders of Arran

One Scottish island that always stands out for me is Arran. For one thing it has an outstanding, knife edged in places, granite ridge, the domain of hill-walkers, scramblers, and rock climbers.

For another it has numerous attractive small villages, scattered like gems on a necklace, all along the circular coastline at handy intervals. It’s great for cycling, outdoors pursuits or just general tourist sightseeing if you enjoy spectacular landscapes.

Public buses run around the island and it has a taxi service. Budget campers usually stay at the basic Glen Rosa campsite as that’s the nearest to the mountains. And what mountains they are.

Being much closer to Glasgow and the Central Belt population they used to be a quieter destination than Skye, Torridon, Rhum, or Glencoe with the added benefit of better weather, less driving hours, and zero traffic jams on the return.

I’ve had many happy weekends and day trips over to Arran, summer and winter, for the past 40 years and it has always been an adventure.
