Bob Law: Anniesland and Knightswood – An Unexpectedly Green Walk.

Large gatres and cobbles

If you look at a map of this district, street map or satellite view, it does not look like you could get an enjoyable green walk out of it but you would be wrong. Recently I did this circular walk, around three hours duration, and really enjoyed it.

Start is Anniesland Cross where Anniesland Court looms large, the tallest listed building in Scotland. The first street up on the left, going up Bearsden Road, is Glencoe Street. Halfway along that street you arrive at old gateposts and a cobbled path. Follow that right onto a tarmac path along a pleasant green ribbon under Fulton Street Bridge to the Youth Hut at Netherton.

A grassy sward continues past a giant bench and playing fields to the roundabout at Wilverton Avenue where you walk up Cowdenhill Road to reach Trinley Brae beside Mace Road.

Walk along this on a grass path with great views to Banner Drive where you can join the Forth and Clyde Canal. Going right on this canal takes you back to Anniesland. Walking left takes you through Knightswood Park with two green additions.

The Wee Park follows the northern edge of Knightswood golf course then Loanfoot Avenue to circle this golf course completely, turning behind the BMX Centre bringing you out at the pond. A further variation takes you along  Pikeman Road, which is another green hill with views, leading back to Anniesland. Sounds complicated but easy to follow in practice and very pleasant throughout with mature woods, two small hills and views. Good paths throughout.
