Bob Law: Walks and Photography – The Romance of Winter

.
Not a title I would normally use to describe a season that can be grim, depressing, hard to get through, and at times, seemingly endless. Having worked in various jobs over the decades, driving and struggling outdoors to deliver or fix things in deep snow, driving rain, ice, frost, savage winds, often during dark, freezing cold long hours it is my least favourite season by a long way.

Bus Stop. The Twilight Zone
Unless you are a ski instructor winter in a northern country usually makes any job you do harder, indoors or out. A real challenge. Not for me, during work hours at least, a ‘winter wonderland’.
However, in the right conditions, and in your own time, relaxed with no deadline to meet, or vehicle to scrape free of ice in the early hours of the morning it can be magical.

Icy Roads in West Glasgow
Misty or foggy days or evenings often have a quiet mystery to them. Snow softens everything, lowers sound from activity, and creates a fresh, clean world, hiding any people made rubbish left in the landscape.

Families Having Fun on Sledging Hill
Even now, any time it snows, I like to get out for a walk, even if it’s just padding round suburban streets in my local area.

In The Park. A Glasgow Winter
Familiar places are often transformed and elevated as these photographs will hopefully show.
