Bob Law: Walks and Photography – Edinburgh Walks Via Day Trips
Recently I have been taking the Glasgow 900 Citylink bus from Buchanan Bus Station to Edinburgh. As I live on the outskirts of Glasgow I have to take a bus into the city centre. 30mins or so. Then the city to city bus 1hr 30 mins usually to Edinburgh Bus Station. If I leave the house just after 9:00am I get into Edinburgh around 11;30am the same day. Then the same journey in return coming back. But this is worth it to explore a new city. With my Saltire over 60s bus pass, or under 22 pass it’s free to travel and so far for this bus there’s no need to book ahead as they run every 15 mins. Wifi, phone chargers, toilets on bus, or in both stations. 30p coins for BBS toilets. Edin Toilets free. I usually take a good book to read for the journey.

As I’ve visited all the usual attractions Edinburgh has to offer I now go further afield. Edinburgh local bus 10 on Lothian Road will take you to Easter and Wester Craiglockhart Hills in 20 mins and you can return from there to the city centre by walking back along the Union Canal. A 3 hour walk in total. Edinburgh bus 11 from Lothian Road allows you to do the Hermitage of Braid, Blackford Hill, and The Braid Hills as a walk. Allow 3 to 4 hours. Braidburn Valley park can also be included in this walk.
Corstorphine Hill

Corstorphine Hill can be accessed from the 900 citylink bus by getting off at either Edinburgh zoo bus stop or Murrayfield bus stop. Another 3 hour walk to Davidson’s Mains Park or Saughton Park. Wherever you end up most local buses will take you back to Princes Street or nearby George Street near the Edinburgh Bus Station from all parts of the city.
Edinburgh’s Individual Hills

Edinburgh has seven beautiful individual hills and many more green spaces. This is just ideas for a few I have climbed recently. Slow traffic between cities can be a hassle these days but if you take something to pass the time on board it helps. It is worth it as I’ve been back three times in one week before the dark evenings and winter arrives.

It also keeps me fit and motivated. Collins Edinburgh Street finder map is a real asset for finding your way around, getting off buses at the right place for walks and seeing new places to explore. The Pentland Hills are also handy via local Edinburgh buses. You can also google online Edinburgh Bus Routes to find the local bus routes and where they go. Happy travels if you do go.
