Bob Law: Lang Craigs and the Overtoun House Estate

One walk I always try to go back to in May/June is Overtoun Estate and the Lang Craigs.

How to get there:

If using by public transport take Bus or Train to Crosslet or Dumbarton East then cross the A82 at Gruggies Burn and follow a path via an obvious gap/ hole in a stone wall up through woods on the left hand side of this stream up a pleasant gorge to reach Overtoun House.

This is a grand Scottish Baronial house sitting high up above Dumbarton within its own extensive estate grounds.

Alternative Route

Alternatively you can walk up the minor horseshoe road  from the village of Milton which loops round via the house to come out at the other exit next to Dumbarton’s Police HQ. A good walk in itself.

If arriving by car you simply drive up the minor Milton road to the house and park beside it. From there several beautiful walks exist around the estate on good paths in a very scenic area.

Overtoun House Tea Room

A tea room inside the house is open on Fridays and Sat urdays only 10am to 4pm but the real draw for me is the surrounding landscape.

Lang Craigs

Lang Craigs, an ancient escarpment of successive lava flows – this makes for an adventurous outing as a thin path runs along the top of this long cliff. Views are amazing and in May/ June wildflowers are everywhere, like bluebells, wild garlic, and lesser celandine.

You can also walk up the scenic glen to the Black Linn Reservoir and Doughnot Hill. Any walk you do here basically is a gem, either up the glen, down the gorge from the bridge or up onto the Lang Craigs. Scenic at any time of year.

We were also lucky enough to see part of the swing bridge arriving up the River Clyde for the new Yoker to Renfrew crossing which will be completed later this year.
