Bob Law: Loch Ardinning and Muirhouse Muir

Looking Towards Loch Lomond and the Luss Hills.

.Walking and Photography in Scotland

Just to the east of the popular Mugdock Country Park, around ten miles north of Glasgow, on the busy and fast A81 two lay-bys holding around a dozen cars in total are spotted just before you drop down into Strathblane. This is the start point for Loch Ardinning and Muirhouse Muir.

(One word of caution. If parking here watch out if you have dogs, elderly, teens, or young children as cars and lorries flash past here at 60 miles per hour. Better to put dogs on a lead while inside the car and keep tight control of the rest, especially if parked on the opposite side from the loch. This is a busy road nowadays and you have to cross it speedily and be fully aware … as I did.)

Once you have gained the path, however, a delightful walk awaits you. Either a pleasant one hour long circuit of the loch itself at an easy pace or a more ambitious two hour circular trek across the adjacent Muirhouse Muir, which is an area of high, flat tableland with great open views over to the Campsie Fells.

A grassy plateau walk, which I really enjoyed and I’d  thoroughly recommend, with views over to the less frequented eastern Campsies and also the wooded Craigend Muir near Lennox Castle.
Good grassy paths throughout but these might be slightly boggy in places after prolonged spells of rain. A good varied walk through this beautiful Scottish Nature Reserve and a mix of different landscapes.

The walks available are marked at the road entrance to the reserve on a board and are easy to follow.

As you are already high up to start with and paths cross a grassy plateau very little effort is required for the panoramic views on all sides.
