Eveline Pye’s African poems are wonderful. Scorchingly vivid, they transport us so we too are right there among people and voices and unfamiliar flora and fauna, among unflinchingly recorded sounds and smells and sights, looking at them from her slightly astonished but always deeply interested gaze. Her unique voice has an almost deadpan irony and scientific detachment and curiosity which inform and illuminate rather than mask the deep humanity and passion for the natural world, her sorrow and anger at our unnatural abuse of it and of the human beings who are its, and our, co-inhabitors. A love letter full of longing for the land beyond the culture-shock. Brilliant. Informed. Informative. Celebratory. A feast for the senses. Food for thought. The best collection I’ve read in ages.
