They will tell you the story of the full range of Glasgow’s unique and architecturally diverse cinema history, from converted warehouses, via the earliest purpose built halls, the peculiarly Scottish back-court theatres, to the finest thirties art deco super-cinemas, highlighting cinemas that were, cinemas that are, and cinemas that might have been.

Opulent adaptation of F Scott Fitzgerald’s great American novel:
The Great Gatsby Friday 17 – Thursday 30 May
Roll up, roll up for Baz Luhrmann’s much-anticipated dazzling epic featuring extravagant visuals, a stonking soundtrack and stellar cast. This unique adaptation of F Scott Fitzgerald’s ‘Great American Novel’ is set in New York in the summer of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz and bootleg kings. Chasing the American Dream, would-be writer Nick (Tobey Maguire) moves from the Midwest and lands next door to mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy (Carey Mulligan), and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton). Drawn into the captivating world of the super-rich, Nick bears witness to impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy.
We’ve just added two extra afternoon screenings of The Great Gatsby – it will screen in 2D on Tuesday 21 May (12.45) and Wednesday 22 May (15.30). All tickets on Tuesday 21 are only £4.50!
Enter our Great Gatsby competition and win two FREE tickets to see the film in either 2D or 3D!
Glasgow Film Festival co-director Allan Hunter is blogging live from Cannes this week and next. Read his verdict on The Great Gatsby on the GFT website.

Pedro Almodóvar returns to his crazy comedy roots with the gloriously camp I’m So Excited! When passengers and crew face a life-threatening situation on board a plane flying to Mexico City, candid confessions – as well as musical interludes – help them ward off fears of imminent death. With lots of outre gags and candy-coloured copulation, this outrageous sex comedy stars many Almodóvar favourites including Cecilia Roth (All About My Mother), Javier Cámara (Talk to Her) and Lola Duenas (Volver), as well as cameos from Penélope Cruz and Antonio Banderas. Ridiculously good fun.
[Gives] a whole new meaning to the word ‘cockpit’. The Hollywood Reporter
Specially commissioned programme notes are available for this film.

The sweaty, claustrophobic reality of being held captive at sea is captured with an unusual level of authenticity in this riveting Danish thriller. In the middle of the Indian Ocean, a Danish freighter is captured by Somali pirates. They demand an enormous ransom for the safe return of the ship and crew. The flinty, ice-cool head of the shipping company assumes responsibility for the negotiations and refuses to give in to their demands. As weeks of stalemate pass, the crew begin to fear for their lives and surrender to despair in a tense, simmering drama with all the nail-biting immediacy of a news bulletin.
The Tramway
Stephen Sutcliffe: Outwork
Exhibition runs until Sun 30 June
Tramway 2
In this, his most ambitious exhibition to date, Sutcliffe will exhibit his recent film Outwork, reconfigured as an installation for multiple screens. The film was originally commissioned for the Margaret Tait Award, 2013.
Outwork is inspired by Erving Goffman’s book Frame Analysis which explores how interpretations shift dramatically within different framing contexts. Sutcliffe employs this premise structurally, with a series of images and animations which explore the determining influence of titles, prefaces and introductions on images. For Tramway’s main gallery, Outwork will be re-presented as a filmic collage across three screens, including new animated sequences and excerpts from previous work.

EXHIBITION: Munch 150 (Great Art on Screen)
In 2013, all of Norway will be celebrating the 150th anniversary of the birth of Edvard Munch (1863-1944), one of the towering figures of modern art. This is already being hailed a “once-in-a-lifetime show”. Global interest is huge – not least as a result of one of his four The Scream (pictured) paintings having recently set a public art auction record of $120 million.
Munch 150 will be co-hosted by the National Museum and the Munch Museum, both in Oslo. This exhibition is the most ambitious presentation of Munch’s art ever. With 220 paintings it will display the greatest number of Munch’s key works ever. Many know Munch as the man who painted The Scream, but his complete works are remarkable and secure his place as one of the greatest artists to have ever lived.

Margaret Tait Award 2013
Nominations open - Deadline: 5pm, Tuesday 2 April 2013.
Nominations are now open for the fourth year of the Margaret Tait Award, supported by Creative Scotland and in partnership with LUX. This award will recognise Scottish or Scotland-based artists who are experimental, innovative and who work within film and moving image.
The Margaret Tait Award was launched in 2009, inspired by the pioneering Orcadian filmmaker Margaret Tait (1918-1999). The recipient of the award will be given a #10,000 prize to create new work and the opportunity to present it at Glasgow Film Festival in 2014. The award is inspired by the wealth of talent emerging from Scotland within this field and hopes to raise the profile of the many galleries, curators and arts organisations who support this area of work. It allows the Festival to have a lasting and meaningful impact on the careers of new filmmaking talent, support new commissions and forge new partnerships across the sector.
Nominations are now sought from the sector.
Deadline: 5pm, Tuesday 2 April 2013.
