9 – 11 September, 2019

Since 1871, on the second Saturday in July, the city of Durham is taken over by miners, trade-unions and the public for the Durham Miners’ Gala (known locally as “The Big Meeting”). This people-centred documentary goes behind the scenes of this annual celebration of noise, colour and solidarity, of class culture, creativity and endeavour. A huge gathering of 200,000 people parade through the streets, honouring their heritage with banners and brass bands. The Big Meeting reflects the past, present and future of the Gala and labour movement, whilst following four protagonists over the course of this impressive working-class occasion.

Followed by a Q&A with director Daniel Draper and producer Christie Allanson.  (Buy tickets for this event on 11 September,)
