Bob Law: Springtime in Edinburgh, Walks and Photography

Edinburgh is a city that is enjoyable and spectacular at any time of year but in spring, March, April, May, it is at its most colourful. If you pick a nice sunny day with light winds it can feel surprisingly warm. Also in spring distance views are better. No heat haze yet.

The tourist crowds are less obvious as well and the parks and green spaces within the city zing with colour. Mid February to early march sees snowdrops, crocus and daffodils appear, usually all within a month of each other but sometimes, given the advance of spring in recent years all three pop might out together.

Botanic Springtime in Edinburgh

Snowdrops still arrive first in January then crocus then daffodils and tulips. In my own garden I have had all four pop out at once as soon as a settled week of warm sunshine persuades them to flower. The Meadows in Edinburgh sports crocus carpets from mid February onward depending on the weather gods. The Botanic gardens are worthwhile visiting from mid April and May for spring displays.

The Pine Grove Walk. Edinburgh Botanic Gardens

From Glasgow’s Buchanan Street bus station the 900 city to city bus departs every 15 mins taking around an hour for the journey to Edinburgh, One hour 20 mins if traffic is bad. Living in Glasgow all year round it is always a delight to arrive in Edinburgh- fresh views and new walks to explore. I take a paperback book to pass the time on the journey or for the younger crowd free bus WiFi or kindle reads are an option.
