Melanie will be talking about the investigative process and artistic journey behind The Lost Sister on Saturday 25July at 2.30pm, Lillie Art Gallery, Milngavie.
Ronnie Kerr, who has written two beautiful sonnets to accompany the visual works, will be joining her to discuss their collaboration and his poems.
The Lost Sister
An exhibition of new photographic works by Glasgow based artist Melanie Sims, inspired by an aspect of her family history – an unknown relative, never spoken of, who was confined to an asylum for the whole of her life.
Believing her mother to be an only child, the artist only later discovered the secret of her mother’s lost sister, Doreen. Using photography, textiles and installation to explore the intangible aspects of a lost personal history, the beautiful, multi-layered works consider notions of loss, denial and the sister bond.

I am looking forward to seeing this exhibition. Family secrets resonate with me. A bit like walking up a dark tunnel blindfolded – there is no light at the end of the tunnel to greet you. I’m glad this artist has used her creativity to bring this lady out of the darkness.
