Specialist Tour | Black History Month: African Women, Myth and Material Memory

black women myths

Tuesday 6 October, 2026, 2.30 p.m.

Glasgow Museums Resource Centre, 200 Woodhead Rd, Glasgow G53 7NN

African myth and folklore play a central role in shaping cultural identity, belief systems and collective memory. Moving between historic wooden artefacts and contemporary works, this tour explores how African women, spiritual power and myth have been represented and, at times, misunderstood.

Lizzie Eidson, Gallery Assistant and African art enthusiast, will be your guide as she examines sculptural and painted depictions of African women across time. She will draw on Ethiopian, Mende and wider African oral traditions, alongside Yoruba-inflected ideas, and discuss how these narratives have been erased and reanimated in contemporary practice.

Free but places limited to 15. Essential to book by emailing.
