Ken Loach’s award-winning feature, Family Life , follows the fate of nineteen-year-old Janice (Sandy Ratcliff), who loses her right to self-determination after she becomes pregnant. Once her parents force her to have an abortion, Janice’s troubling behaviour comes under further scrutiny, culminating in electro-convulsive therapy which eventually reduces her to little more than a case study for medical students. Filmed in a quasi documentary style, this socially conscious drama is a sobering reflection on class, social convention and the generation gap.
