Glasgow West End: Pat's Guide to Eating Out: Restaurants, Cafes and Bistros: Belgian

Current Deals

Introducing Serge, July 2008 - just above Brel, Ashton Lane: Should be fun to go along and try out their Wine Tasting and Dinner on Monday 28th July, 7pm, where wine boffin Ross Buchanan from inverarity Wines will tell you all about some wonderful wines produced from little known grape varieties. Apart from the wine and two course meal - I'm told that it will be a night full of surprises! Serge is certainly a very attractive little restaurant and one of the many new places popping up around the West End.

Brel

39 Ashton Lane, G12 8SJ (342 4966) - Brel has been a popular addition to the eclectic mix of restaurants in Ashton Lane. The interesting cuisine and extensive selection of drinks - including, of course, Belgian beer is proving very attractive. (££) A selection of dishes half price between 5.00 - 7.00p.m.

I enjoy sitting in their sun lounge reading a book with a coffee. A good place to go alone or to meet friends. Very popular with students and great entertainment.

We visited Brel on a trip to Glasgow. We were happy to discover the West End and liked Ashton Lane. We had a very good time in Brel and have told our friends about the music and happy atmosphere. We tried Belgian beer for the first time in Scotland.

I feel i have to run around this site providing some balance to the stream of unconditional praise for all the restaurants shown here.
Brel - mmmm - it is true, you can get a fair plate of mussels and chips ala Belgian style. that's about where it stops. Bar service as others have commented is appalling, table service occasionally poor too. Other dishes on the menu ( an oil drenched Aubergine object springs to mind) indigestible.
The back sun lounge does have great potential but is often smokier than a Bangkok opium den. Usual blood-coming-from-the-ears volume for those who like their music real LOUD - especially the staff (and too bad for those that don't)
Avoid unless you really need a plate of moules frites.

Recently went to Brel (three times) when on holiday in Glasgow. Great beer, super entertainment and very friendly staff. Also enjoyed the mussels. Look out for more visitors from Montreal.
Also want to say 'Fantastic website' - keep up the good work.

When back in Glasgow, I went to Brel and was pretty disappointed by the poor service. The staff seem pretty keen on themselves and customers seem to be tolerated as a nuisance and nothing more. Not impressed.

So our Jacques has reached Glasgow? How come? Tell me what you can about him please!

The service in Brel is appaling, it seems if you're not one of the in-crowd your money isnt as good ... with all the competition in the West End i find it amazing people still go there. Dont expect the waiters to smile at you, even when you leave ...

TAKE IT BACK, SEE YOU HAVE A FEW ENTRIES ON ASHTON LANE, JUST FINDING IT VERY ANNOYING AS MY PARTNER HAD HIS HEART SET ON GOING TO DIERFUIRACHA FOR HIS BIRTHDAY TOMORROW AS IT HAS BEEN HIGHLY RECOMENDED. HOWEVER, BEING A STUDENT, I HAVE A LIMIT ON WHAT I CAN SPEND. I HAVE TRIED PHONING THEM ON 3373636 BUT ALL I'M GETTING IS AN ANSWERPHONE. IHAVE NO IDEA ON MENUS OR PRICE LISTS AND I CAN'T MAKE A BOOKING UNTIL I DO ALTHOUGH BY NOW IT'LL BE TOO LATE. I HAVE ONLY BEEN ABLE TO FIND ONE MENTION OF IT THROUGH THE USE OF WEB SITES AND IT, IRONICALLY, WAS THE ONLY RESTAURANT LISTED THAT HAD NO REVIEW! THE RESTAURANT HAS A WEBSITE ITSELF BUT THE INTERNET WILL NOT LET ME FIND IT AND I'VE BEEN TRYING ALL DAY, SO YOU CAN UNDERSTAND MY FRUSTRATION!

Hi Sloan, I saw your post on another website too! You must really like this woman! My husband is from Glasgow and I'll ask him if he has any suggestions. It will be hard without a last name, but I'll see if I can help. Friends Reunited (www.friendsreunited.co.uk) has a list of schools in Glasgow, but you can't search for someone without their last name. If you register, you might be able to email one teacher from each school and see what happens. You can also post a "LOOKING FOR..." type post on the site as well. Maybe someone will recognise her if you describe her there. Good luck! Jan Jan

I am looking for an individual named Pauline from Glasgow, Scotland. She is 31 years old and has blonde straight hair. She teaches at a primary school in the city and I met her in Geneva, Switzerland this past weekend July 25th and she gave me her email and I can not find it. The first part of the email was Paulineone@ then last part I do not have. Does anyone know of a way to find this out or any links or school phone numbers I may be able to call. Thank you for any help whatsoever. I really appreciate it.
