GFF13: Final weekend

Fashion in Film: SHOWstudio: Fashion Film in the Digital Age

Friday 22 February (18.30), CCA

Set up in 2000 by fashion photographer Nick Knight, Showstudio is a fashion website with a focus on delivering fashion as it happens. Via live blogging and streaming, the website broadcasts fashion and catwalk shows, as well as producing fashion films with designers such as Christopher Kane, Gareth Pugh and Alexander McQueen. Head of Fashion Film, Marie Schuller, visits GFF to talk about the changing face of fashion and its relationship with film in the digital age. Using archive films from the Showstudio back catalogue, this unique presentation explores how film and ever-changing technology is reshaping the fashion industry.

Fashion in Film: Red Bull Catwalk Studio presents Alex Mattsson

Saturday 23 February (18.00, 19.00, 20.00 & 21.00), SWG3

Following last season's successful collaboration between Fred Butler and Two Inch Punch for London Fashion Week, Red Bull Catwalk Studio have supported menswear designer Alex Mattsson for the London Collection: Men AW13. Creating a bespoke soundtrack with the hotly-tipped Zebra Katz and a film directed by Grace Ladoja, the Alex Mattsson presentation was one of the most sought after tickets of 2013's London Collections: Men. The film, shot by Grace in Los Angeles with Zebra Katz's Ojay Morgan, plays on the city's biker and gang culture and features Njena Reddd Foxxx, a regular Zebra Katz collaborator.

You have four opportunities (18.00, 19.00, 20.00 and 21.00) to come and see Alex's presentation and Grace's film and hear the pair chat live about their recent collaboration.

Free but booking is essential. Please email

Art and experimental films: Crossing the Line highlights

Want to see films that light the touch-paper to your imagination? Burst out of the restraints of traditional genres and narratives, and genuinely open your eyes afresh? Welcome to the strand for you: Crossing the Line. This celebration of films that cross over between visual art and cinema still has four more extraordinary films to come...

Palme d'Or winner Apichatpong Weerasethakul's latest film, Mekong Hotel, screens on Saturday 23 February (18.45). This inventive mix of fact and fiction explores themes central to the artist's work; romantic relationships, reincarnation (personified by intestine-eating ghosts) and the legacy of violence that once dominated Thailand's northeast.

New York artist Jem Cohen presents a charming and intelligent reflection on the role that art plays in our lives in Museum Hours (Friday 22 February, 18.00 & Sunday 24 February, 12.45). This glorious city symphony of the art and architecture of Vienna mixes sumptuous close-ups of Bruegel the Elder's peasant landscapes with the art that can be found in seemingly mundane, everyday objects and settings.

As part of CCA (Glasgow) and Stills' (Edinburgh) joint exhibition ECONOMY, GFF will screen Staande! Debout!, a new film by Anu Pennanen and Stephane Querrec (Friday 22 February, 10.30am). A fictionalised account of the impact of the closure of a car factory on the community of Vilvoorde, Belgium, the film attempts to overcome myth-making to make sense of the traumatic events.

Breaking the Frame (Sunday 24 February, 17.50) is a mesmerising portrait of groundbreaking artist and kickass feminist Carolee Schneemann whose work has transformed discourses on the body, sexuality and gender since the 1960s.

Margaret Tait Award 2013

Nominations open - Deadline: 5pm, Tuesday 2 April 2013.

Nominations are now open for the fourth year of the Margaret Tait Award, supported by Creative Scotland and in partnership with LUX. This award will recognise Scottish or Scotland-based artists who are experimental, innovative and who work within film and moving image.

The Margaret Tait Award was launched in 2009, inspired by the pioneering Orcadian filmmaker Margaret Tait (1918-1999). The recipient of the award will be given a #10,000 prize to create new work and the opportunity to present it at Glasgow Film Festival in 2014. The award is inspired by the wealth of talent emerging from Scotland within this field and hopes to raise the profile of the many galleries, curators and arts organisations who support this area of work. It allows the Festival to have a lasting and meaningful impact on the careers of new filmmaking talent, support new commissions and forge new partnerships across the sector.

Nominations are now sought from the sector.

Deadline: 5pm, Tuesday 2 April 2013.

14th - 24th February, 2013

Film lovers, rejoice! Glasgow Film Festival today announced its most ambitious programme yet: bookended by two very different romantic comedies, kicking off on Valentine's Day and ending on the night of the 85th Academy Awards.

Supported by Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, Creative Scotland and EventScotland, with 368 screenings, panel discussions, live performances and special events, this is the most extensive Glasgow Film Festival programme to date. It truly is a festival for the whole city, too, spreading out further than ever before into twenty seven venues - everywhere from the stately surroundings of Glasgow Cathedral to a secret location somewhere in the depths of the Subway system.

There are a record number of UK premieres amongst this year's films, and GFF's unique programme of special events celebrating the joy of cinema gets even more innovative in 2013, with contributions from comedians, musicians, comic book legends, fashion designers and even Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond. It's a programme that wears its love of film - and of the cinema-going experience in all its forms - very prominently on its sleeve.

Glasgow Film Festival

Opening Gala:

Populaire UK PREMIERE On Valentine's Day, movie lovers will walk down the red carpet for the UK premiere of sparkling French romantic comedy Populaire, starring Deborah Francois, Roman Duris and The Artist's Brenice Bejo. With the retro appeal of Mad Men and the glossy allure of a Doris Day/Rock Hudson tussle, this gorgeous, candy-coated romance between the fastest typist in the world and her handsome, commitment-phobic boss will melt hearts (and inspire wardrobes). Thursday 14 February (19.30 & 20.15)

Joss Whedon's Much Ado About Nothing UK PREMIERE

What do you do when you've just made the most successful superhero blockbuster ever? In the case of Avengers Assemble writer/director Joss Whedon, you invite a group of actor friends to your home for a fortnight and shoot an inspired, inventive version of Shakespeare's classic battle of the sexes. Stuffed with familiar faces from Whedon's cult oeuvre (look out for actors from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dollhouse and Firefly giving their best hey nonny noes), this Much Ado About Nothing is a warm, witty and accessible take on one of the original rom coms. Sunday 24 February (20.15)

Allan Hunter, Co-Director of Glasgow Film Festival, said: 'Glasgow Film Festival has grown into a massive celebration of every aspect of the moving image. We all spend part of our lives watching films, playing games or catching up with television but there is still nothing to match sharing the experience with fellow enthusiasts, meeting the filmmakers and finding fresh inspiration. We are extremely proud of an ambitious 2013 programme that promises unforgettable moments in venues all across the city.'

SPECIAL EVENTS

Catwalk shows. Live video gaming. DJ sets. GFF's events programme has always made the festival particularly unique, and this year we celebrate cinema with almost fifty different events from panel discussions to comedy, some embracing the cinematic in television and computer games, some tracing the relationships between film and fashion or music.

Brand new event: Red Bull Catwalk Studio presents Alex Mattsson

Saturday 23 February (18.00, 19.00, 20.00 & 21.00), SWG3

Creating a bespoke soundtrack with the hotly-tipped Zebra Katz and a film directed by Grace Ladoja, the Alex Mattsson presentation was one of the most sought after tickets of 2013's London Collections: Men. Tickets are free and available on the day from the venue.

Festival Celebrity Picks

Five picks of the Festival programme: Alan Bissett We asked our pal, author Alan Bissett to let us know which five films of the Festival have got him all excited and here's what he told us...

Jaws

Thursday 21 (18.00) & Friday 22 February (20.20), The Tall Ship

The best film ever made (true fact) in an apt setting. Not only will you be watching a masterpiece of suspense, its cracking cast marshalled with incredible skill by a young Steven Spielberg, but if it's a sell-out you also get to walk on board, look around and say, 'We're gonna need a bigger boat.'

Alasdair Gray: A Life in Progress

Thursday 21 February (13.30), GFT

A portrait of a unique mind and Scotland's greatest living genius. Author of the classic novel Lanark and a painter beyond repute, expect to come away as dazzled and baffled as you would after a meeting with the man himself.

Why Can't Women Make Feature Films?

Saturday 9 February (15.30), CCA

A much needed debate. For every Kathryn Bigelow there's a... well who, exactly? It's not news that filmmaking is dominated by Men With Beards, but why should this be the case when there are so many talented female artists in every other sphere? The ever redoubtable Hannah McGill and panel will take your (probably sexist) questions.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Friday 8 February (23.00), GFT

Probably the most charming, energetic and instantly likeable of John Hughes' movies (rather like its protagonist). The most joyous, angst-free film about teenagers ever made and certainly the one only when you'll be rooting for the popular kid in school. If your face doesn't break into a big, daft grin during the 'Twist and Shout' sequence you have no soul.

We Are Northern Lights

Saturday 16 February (15.15), GFT

Brought to you by the excellent Nick Higgins, this is an elaborate, ambitious tapestry of a film that aims to capture the shifting mosaic that is Scotland, stitched together from short films submitted for competition. Veers from the surreal to the heartbreaking. A marvellous achievement.

Alan Bissett is the 2011 Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Writer of the Year

Five picks of the Festival programme: Muriel Gray

"In an act of unparalleled brutality GFF has demanded a list of only five choices from this amazing programme. Five!! Yes, you read that right! How is that possible? This is one the best ever programmes ever, from the sublime set of classic Cagney films, to the ever brilliant FrightFest, gaming events, short film heaven and Scottish heavyweights sharing their knowledge with budding filmmakers. It's beyond brilliant. Obviously any sane person would wish to see every single film and attend every event, but no. We're being asked for five. Pah! Damn you and your reductionist choices."

"Oh, alright then. Here's some."

Sawney: Flesh of Man

Friday 22 February (15.00), GFT
Desperate to see Sawney. David Hayman as a cannibal can't be anything but unmissable.

FrightFest: Byzantium & Bring Me the Head of Machine Gun Woman

FrightFest takes place on Friday 22 & Staurday 23 February, GFT
Wish I could see every single FrightFest film, but if pressed I'm torn between Neil Jordan's Byzantium, a creepy vampire affair, and Bring Me the Head of Machine Gun Woman (which I'm assuming is based on the books of Beatrix Potter). Please note Byzantium is now sold out.

Rab's Video Game Empty

Friday 22 Februrary (21.00), CCA
Have actually already bought our tickets for the gaming show Rab's Video Game Empty, for two fourteen-year-old boy gamers and myself (of course). They're thrilled. I think. How do you tell? In fact how do you tell if fourteen-year-olds are even alive? Blinking?

Game of Thrones Screening and Panel Discussion

Thursday 21 February (18.30), GFT
I'm embarrassingly excited that cast members will be there. I've had a crush on Peter Dinklage since The Station Agent, although I'm much too old and possibly too tall for him. (If it's Joffrey we can call the police domestic unit and have him arrested.)

Kapow! Pros vs Super-fans Quiz

Wednesday 20 February (20.00), CCA
Want to see all the Marvel films again, but since you're making me choose, the Kapow evening of Pros vs Super-fans will obviously be awesome. If it's sold out, then any James Cagney will delight me. Damn it, it all delights me!

Muriel Gray is a Scottish journalist and broadcaster, novelist, munro-bagger and all-round good egg.

Highlights include:

Second screening of Joss Whedon's Much Ado About Nothing announced!

Fans of Joss Whedon will be delighted to hear that we have put on a second screening of the director's Much Ado About Nothing on the same day as the UK Premiere, which will be this year's GFF Closing Gala.

Tickets for the UK Premiere of Whedon's latest film sold out within an hour of going on sale on Thursday 17 January; long before the cult director himself was confirmed as attending the Festival. This second screening will be at Cineworld on Glasgow's Renfrew Street, on Sunday 24 February at 20.45, and tickets are going on sale immediately, via Glasgow Film Theatre's Box Office.

Allison Gardner, co-director of Glasgow Film Festival, said: 'We're over the moon to be able to offer fans another opportunity to catch this wonderful and highly in-demand film.'

Much Ado About Nothing is on general UK release from Friday 14 June.

NEW FOR 2013

Photo: buena onda. Three new programming strands for this year's Festival were announced in November 2012.

Buena Onda: New Brazilian Cinema: As Brazil begins to take its place on the world stage, both as an emerging superpower and as the next host nation of the Olympics, we examine some of the great new work coming out of the country. It's also a great excuse to throw a traditional Brazilian Carnival party, with a samba bus to take you to a secret location, and a special screening of 1970s classic Black Orpheus.

James Cagney: Top of the World, Ma! Our retrospective this year takes a long, loving look at the career of the Oscar-winning Hollywood tough guy, from the young street rat-turned gangster of Angels With Dirty Faces, to the menacing obsessive lover of Love Me or Leave Me.

Game Cats Go Miaow!: Robert Florence, star of the BBC comedy series Burnistoun, curates a look at the cross-over between cinema and video gaming. A panel of gaming experts review the hotly-anticipated Aliens: Colonial Marines on the big screen, followed by a comparison screening of Aliens itself. A whole host of comedians pack themselves in for Rab's Video Game Empty, a quiz show with a difference, and we take a searing look at epic game Dark Souls and the whole of the dark fantasy genre.

Our brand new Festival Club takes over CCA's Terrace Bar every day and night for the duration of the Festival. Rub shoulders with filmmakers and visiting guests, ask the GFF team for advice planning your schedule, take part in a daily programme of debates and discussions and then dance the night away with a great selection of DJs and live acts. Festival Club listings will be online at www.glasgowfilm.org/festivalclub and posted daily in the GFT foyer.
