INTERNATIONAL WELCOME CLUB - WELLINGTON CHURCH

Trip to New Lanark

Why don't you come with us to NEW LANARK on Saturday 27 June. This WORLD HERITAGE SITE is an 18th century village on the banks of the River Clyde near spectacular waterfalls. The water powered cotton mills and the village where the workers lived were social experiments. Every child went to school and was not permitted to work until they were ten years old. Adults, too, received lessons in many subjects including social skills such as dancing. The care of the health and wellbeing of the workers was light years ahead of the time. This beautiful setting is well worth seeing for many reasons and there is plenty to do. Entrance is £6.95 for an adult and £5.95 for a child or concession.Family tickets (for 2 adults + 2 children) are £21.95. FOOD

Bring your own PICNIC LUNCH but there is a very good cafe where you can buy hot food too. We plan to go in cars so there should be no travel costs. There is also an excellent FISH and CHIP restaurant in the nearby town of LANARK and for those who want to make a day of it, that is a good place to finish up in for a meal.

If you would like to come along - please let me know in the first instance so that we can make sure there are enough cars. Please let us know if you are bringing children as they must sit in legally approved car seats. My email is: internationalclub@ntlworld.com OR phone Heather on 0141 339 7413. We will leave from Wellington Church hall door in Southpark Avenue at 10am on SATURDAY 27 June.

AWAY DAY PROGRAMME

Full details at the launch of this programme on Friday 1 May.
The idea is that Club members go in a group to visit an interesting place at minimal cost and maximum enjoyment. In between the days away, we plan to go to events such as Glasgow's West End Festival, Govan Fair, Castlemilk Family Day and other fun times as they occur. If there is something YOU would like to go to in company with others from Wellington Church, INTERNATIONAL WELCOME CLUB, please let Heather or Grace or Christine know. Tel: 0141 339 7413 or email:internationalclub@ntlworld.com

Saturday 29 May

BBQ at Mugdock Country Park.

This beautiful park is ideal for gentle walking, observing wild-life at close quarters and gathering from nature's larder. Last year one member made nettle soup from nettles gathered in the park - and we had fresh thyme and rosemary on our BBQed meat.

Saturday 27 June

Visit to historic New Lanark

This 18th century village was a unique example of co-operative living. It is set on the River Clyde near the beautiful Falls of Clyde. Apart from seeing how the social experiment worked and where the great cotton mills were located, you can walk to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds' hide and use their telescope to watch what is flying around.

Saturday 25 July

Be King or Queen of the Castle. See through the magnificent Stirling Castle where once the Kings and Queens of Scotland held court. Watch expert weavers create the tapestries which will adorn the walls of the vast chambers. Visit the residence of the Lords of the Isles who were Ambassadors to the court. And drop in to see the old time jail.

Saturday 22 AUGUST

Visit to authentic HIGHLAND GAMES on the Island of Bute. Hear top-grade pipe bands vie for the champion's cup. Watch Highland dancers who are poetry in motion. See the kilt clad, heavy athletes as they throw the hammer and toss the caber. Enjoy the day in the company of the many hundreds who'll be there for one of Scotland's Homecoming Events.

For all of these outings, we try to keep costs to a minimum by buying group tickets where possible. So - early notice that you want to be there on the day, is very helpful. Each person pays their own travel and brings their own packed lunch. But we guarantee you'll enjoy your visit and have good company.

Glasgow University has a wonderful accommodation unit. They sent along booklets which could be useful whether you are in their property or not. If you didn't get a booklet on the night, come along on Friday 10 October at 7.30pm to the next meeting in Wellington Church hall (enter from Southpark Avenue G12 8 LE) and collect your free copy. Councillor Braat (who has Belgian roots and spoke Flemish and Dutch as his principle languages till he was 19) also had useful leaflets on accommodation and we have some of those left to give out to anyone who'd like one. Should you have any questions about renting flats in Glasgow, please don't hesitate to email us. If we don't know the answer we'll find someone who does!

CHOIR - SINGERS

are invited to join the choir which leads our worship at Sunday morning service. The choir meets at 10am in the LIBRARY to practise. Anyone who has a good singing voice is invited to join. You do not need to read music but that is a help because the choir is adventurous. The church service starts at 11am. Everyone of any faith and none is welcome. Wellington Church is Christian, Presbyterian and part of the Church of Scotland.

Wi-Fi connection.
Home from home - especially if you're far away from your Mother's good cooking!
