Trip to New Lanark

Photo: calligraphy. Hallo Everyone,
We are having a lovely time on TUESDAYS and FRIDAYS when we have Tea and Conversation in Wellington Church Hall at 77 Southpark Avenue, Glasgow G12 8LE between 5.30pm and 7.30pm.

The attached picture shows Tao who dropped in last week with his wife Sandy for a cuppa and demonstrated some neat calligraphy on the magic calligraphy scroll that, by coincidence, Luna just happened to have with her!

We can't promise such demonstrations tomorrow Tuesday 21 August or on Friday 24 August but we can offer some nice green tea or black tea, fruit and biscuits and pleasant conversation. Come in if you are passing. We welcome anyone to visit us in the INTERNATIONAL WELCOME CLUB. This is a totally informal occasion giving new comers to Glasgow the chance to find out what we do at the Club. If you've already visited us, pass this invitation on to a friend who hasn't been to the Club yet, and bring them with you on Tuesday or Friday.

The INTERNATIONAL WELCOME CLUB has been running for ten years meeting in the church hall every Friday evening from September till May.

During the SUMMER (i.e. Just now!!!) we go away for day trips to interesting places. Recently we went to Highland Games in Inverkeithing. (see the Club's Facebook pages)

This week - on SATURDAY 25 AUGUST - we will travel by train to NEW LANARK. This is a world heritage site. New Lanark World Heritage Site

The village was built by a mill owner for his mill workers near the scenic and powerful water of the Falls of Clyde. This is a beautiful and historic place and we INVITE YOU to come with us on Saturday 25 August.

Meet at Glasgow CENTRAL RAILWAY STATION LOW LEVEL ticket office on Saturday at 10.30.

The train to Lanark leaves at 10.47 but you need to have time to BUY your ticket and WALK to the correct platform for the train. If you miss this train you have an hour to wait for the next one.

A day return for an ordinary adult fare is £7.20. You can buy your ticket on line and check out what other fare you can buy with a student card or railcard.

In Lanark we connect with a local bus - or we can walk - to New Lanark village. Each person is responsible for their own ticket and time keeping! We aim to be back in Glasgow around 5pm.

Bring your own picnic lunch. We plan to eat on the roof garden if the weather is good. But there is a good cafe in the village for those who'd prefer to buy food. It is free to walk about and see the sights and take the riverside walk. Most of the interesting points can be accessed by buying a ticket which is £8.50 for adults or £7 for students or seniors or concessions. Tickets can be purchased online.

There is a 15-20 minute walk between Lanark railway station and New Lanark village. There is also a local bus service but my brain won't take any more travel info so I can't tell you how much that costs!!!

If the weather is as kind as it was for our trip to the Highland Games we should be in for a treat. The location of New Lanark village is beautiful with wonderful woodland walks and riverside bird hides where you can observe birds without you being seen by them.

Let me know if you plan to come with the Club to NEW LANARK on Saturday 25 August. Christine and I look forward to seeing you then.

Sincerely
Grace Franklin
