Tramway, 25 Albert Drive, Glasgow, G41 2PE
23rd July – 2nd August
Starcatchers are delighted to welcome babies and their adults to Blue Block Studio a unique shared experience for babies 0 – 2 years. It offers the opportunity for adult and baby to interact in a friendly, inspiring and beautiful environment. The Studio is carefully created play space providing a safe environment for babies and their adults to interact, engage and explore. A range of objects, stimuli and sounds encourage play, discovery and wonder allowing the very young the freedom to follow and engage with what interests them. Created by early years artist Katy Wilson in collaboration with a team of fellow artists Blue Block Studio is a Culture 2014 commission ensuring Scotland’s very young benefit from creative cultural experiences at the beginning of their lives.
Blue Block Studio looks at genuine connection, interaction and play between an adult and a child valuing play as vital to physical and mental development. In designing the environment Katy and the team considered the needs of babies, how the space should be open, welcoming, encouraging movement self directed exploration and choice. At every stage in the development of Blue Block Studio each aspect has been shared, adapted and developed following input and feedback with babies and their adults. The end result is an experience created for the very young by the very young.
Speaking about the motivation to create Blue Block Studio Katy explained: “We want to provide a sense of freedom, physically. We want to make a safe environment – when you look around there are very few places that have thought about babies, and how they can be in the space. We are making something closer to an art studio than a theatre experience. It is interactive – the children create some of the images, working with the idea that young children can create and play unselfconsciously”.
Blue Block Studio is a Starcatchers production and will visit 10 communities across Scotland as part of the Culture 2014 programme celebrating the Commonwealth Games. Blue Block Studio will be joined on its Scottish tour by Yellow Valley. Yellow Valley is a loveable, contemporary, musical-storytelling performance, created especially for children aged two to four years old, inspired by Kenyan children’s book Who’s Calling by Charity Waciuma.
