The Projectionists Exhibition, Cafe Bar GFT, 20th February – 20th March
The Projectionists exhibition
GFT, 12 Rose Street, Glasgow
Thursday 20 February – Friday 7 March
Photographer Eleanor de Chastelain Simpson will have an exhibition of her photographs in GFT’s cafe bar during Glasgow Film Festival. The exhibition documents the last days of traditional cinema projection and was first exhibited in Newcastle at the Tyneside Cinema in spring 2013.
Eleanor said:
‘The Projectionists’ is an ongoing project creating portraits of cinema projectionists around the UK. With digital changes to the cinema experience, the need for projectionists is disappearing fast. From independent cinema to art house to multiplex to IMAX, the focus of this work is to document these people practicing a skill they love. While digital formats can have many benefits, and represent an important step in cinema history, there was always something nostalgic and comforting about seeing a head peering through the projection booth at your local pictures.
This project has received practical and/or financial support from the University of Cumbria, Virgin Trains, Vue Cinemas, Film4 and The GFT. My thanks also to all of the cinemas who co-operated. And of course, the Projectionists. Thank you for not being camera shy.’
