When thousands of European filmgoers recently voted for their favourite film of the past year, they didn’t choose Searching for Sugar Man or The Impossible or Anna Karenina. They voted for The Gilded Cage, a warm-hearted crowd-pleaser that stormed the French box office. Maria (Rita Blanco) and Jose (Joaquim de Almeida) emigrated from Portugal to Paris thirty years ago. She is a concierge and he is a building site foreman. They are happy and contented until the day Jose learns he has inherited the family winery in Portugal. Now they can go home and make all their dreams come true but is that what they really want and how do they break the news to their friends and neighbours?
