Mary Irvine, blogging about Busy Times

lochBusy Times

How time doth pass when you’re having fun! It seems ages since I last wrote anything just for myself but I have been busy nevertheless. I knew I should never have agreed to be the Chairman/woman/person (take your pick) of a second writers’ group – like to please as many as possible.

Anyway it has involved proof-reading, editing, formatting – all the stuff that falls upon the one who can’t say ‘no’ – 2 club books in less than a year. Then there are the launches, speakers, selling – you know the drill. Not that I’m complaining. I enjoyed every – well, almost every – minute of it. A report of the launch of ‘2014 A Year to Remember’ is appended at the end of this blog.

But it’s nice to know it’s all over and the last meetings for the 2013/2014 sessions are at the end of June so I should, in theory, have more time for my own writing –in particular, a biography of Margaret Harrison and a short story for potential publication in Greece, although this time it isn’t about Greece – but it could be. All will be revealed a) when it’s finished and b) when they decide whether or not to publish it! Oh, I’m also collating some info regarding a big project with one of the clubs in conjunction with a charity. Don’t want to say too much as it’s not finalised. Depends on funding and I don’t want to jinx that.

Wedding 2014 055-2Dog-Sitting

Have been helping out on a daily basis with a new addition to the family. An Australian Labradoodle who goes by the name of Chip and looks a bit like my oldest grandson –same colour hair and snub nose. He is quite delightful and full of puppiness. I think a baby is less tiring in many ways. You don’t need to run (literally) after a baby. He’s not mine by the way. Belongs to son/daughter-in-law.

Wedding Celebrations

The most recent big event in my life was my son’s marriage to Carol at Boturich Castle. As the mother of the groom I wasn’t involved in the organisation. I just had to turn up and not embarrass him. As if… Does make me wonder about how I brought him up but best not to go there. A few minor glitches but otherwise the whole day went well; the scenery was spectacular and the weather exceptionally kind.

Wedding 2014 012-2The lady who performed the marriage ceremony was a Spiritualist Inter-Faith Minister. That nudged me to dig out something I wrote shortly after my return to the UK following a visit to a spiritualist church in Hull.

Watch Your Back!

Wedding 2014 037-2My first visit. About forty people present, an even gender mix, wide spread of ages. After welcomes and a hymn a plate was passed and the out-of-town guest speaker introduced. Smiling broadly her eyes encompassed all the congregation. Eyes closed for a moment she spoke.

“There’s an elderly grey-haired lady, brightly coloured clothes. Only recently passed.”

Her eyes again moved, this time stopping on the young lady sitting directly in front of me. The Speaker went on to discuss the relationship between grandma and granddaughter. She paused mid-sentence.

“There’s a tall man. Long white hair. Not old. He’s trying to push in, insisting on giving a message. Very rude. ‘Watch your back!’ Does that mean anything?”

The recipient shook her head.

“I’ll ask… oh, he’s gone!”

The session continued, other messages conveyed via the medium and the evening was over. I got into the car with my hostess for the week.

“Do mediums ever get massages muddled?”

“Sometimes they can’t pinpoint the actual person messages are meant for. Why?”

“Just interested.”

But it was more then interest. The rude man described fitted my late partner. I had a disc problem so he was forever telling me to ‘Watch my back’!
