Stuart Cosgrove, Govanhill Book Festival
Friday 28 August, 2020 at 7 p.m.
Stuart Cosgrove is a well know writer and broadcaster. His “Soul Trilogy” Detroit 67, Memphis 68 and Harlem 69 weave a wonderful story of soul music set against a backdrop of civil rights, the war in Vietnam and disaffected youth. They are particularly relevant today as many of the themes have been brought back to the surface by Black Lives Matter.
Following on from his acclaimed Soul Trilogy, Stuart returns to the American post-war era with his highly topical new book, ‘Cassius X: Six Months That Shaped The Sixties’. The book follows the young boxer Cassius Clay’s rise as a fighter alongside his growing involvement with the Black Power movement and Malcolm X – Cassius Clay changed his name to Cassius X and then to his islamic name, Muhammad Ali.
Cassius X documents Ali’s growing success as a sporting legend to the backdrop of the soul music, which formed a soundtrack to this era of social and political turmoil.
Cassius X – Available to buy September at Waterstones.
