Tom of Finland, GFT, 12 – 17 August, 2017
The latest from Finnish director Dome Karukoski (The Grump, Heart of a Lion), this beautifully shot biopic pays homage to Touko Laaksonen and his alter ego Tom of Finland, one of gay culture’s most important icons. The film follows changing attitudes to sexuality through the decades, moving between Touko’s repressive home in Finland and the more accepting USA. We see his trajectory to cult status, and the backlash when the AIDS crisis strikes. Pekka Strang excels in the lead role, portraying the man convincingly from insecure WWII soldier to world-renowned star.
