Unveiling Nelson Mandela Statue in Glasgow
The Nelson Mandela statue will be unveiled at Nelson Mandela Place in Glasgow city centre on Friday, October 9, 2026, at 4:00 PM

Nelson Mandela was given the Freedom of the City of Glasgow in 1981 – when he was still in prison in Robben Island, where he spent 27 years before his release in 1990. In 1994 Nelson Mandela was elected President of South Africa in 1994 with the ending of apartheid.
The statue, created by renowned sculptor Alan B Herriot, will stand on a plinth of South African granite in Nelson Mandela Place. Map Nelson Mandela Place, Glasgow
