One of the boldest adaptations of William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, this Oscar-winning musical transposes the eternal story of doomed romance to the mean streets of 1950s New York City. The feuding families of Shakespeare’s story become street gangs – the white Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks – while the ‘star-cross’d lovers’ are Tony and Maria, who believe nothing can stand in the way of their love despite their opposing loyalties. A vibrant and moving take on a classic tale, with a mesmerizing turn from Natalie Wood.
