West Side Story, GFT Sat 1 and Sun 2 May, 2016

One of the boldest adaptations of William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet.
Sunday 1 & Monday 2 May
Running time: 2h31m
One of the boldest adaptations of William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, this Oscar-winning musical transposes the eternal story of doomed romance to the mean streets of 1950s New York City. The feuding families of Shakespeare’s story become street gangs – the white Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks – while the ‘star-cross’d lovers’ are Tony and Maria, who believe nothing can stand in the way of their love despite their opposing loyalties. A vibrant and moving take on a classic tale, with a mesmerizing turn from Natalie Wood.
Directors Jerome Robbins, Robert Wise Cast Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Russ Tamblyn, USA 1961, 2h31m, some subtitles, PG
