Kirstin Innes’s Fishnet wins Guardian Not the Booker Prize

Kirstin Innes’s debut novel Fishnet, a dark and challenging exploration of the sex industry, has won the Guardian newspaper’s Not the Booker Prize. On receiving the award Kirstin said, “I can’t quite believe this has happened. Fishnet was up against some utterly brilliant novels, so it’s mind-blowing to have won both stages of the competition. I hope this prize can bring a little bit more attention to some of the issues I wanted to address with the book. Huge thanks to the judging panel and to the people who participated in the public vote!”

Fishnet is the story of Fiona who accidentally discovers that her sister Rona, missing for 6 years, had been a sex worker. The novel follows Fiona’s obsessive quest to discover the truth.

The Guardian said Fishnet is, ‘…an impressive debut… asks difficult and brave questions. Crucially, the novel works because it shows how these questions matter to individual humans; because it’s so full of empathy… this is an important book.’ The author Ian Rankin recently said he thought the book was, ‘thoughtful, bruising, poignant and poetic’.
