Creative writing: the novel

In this course students will study the novel form, looking at structural aspects and techniques from a writer’s perspective in order to help develop their own writing. The course will include writing in class, using exercises and prompts, and reading published work to better understand techniques. Each week students’ own fiction will be discussed in a supportive environment.
During the course students will have the opportunity to complete a portfolio of original writing

Dialogue in fiction

A practical one day course that focuses on dialogue in fiction. The following questions will be addressed. How is successful dialogue constructed? What techniques do writers use to create dialogue? Why is some dialogue flat and unconvincing? How is character developed through dialogue? What methods do writers use to capture ‘realistic speech’? Practical examples
from fiction will be used and students will have the chance to write in class and leave with a deeper understanding of how
dialogue functions.

Charles Bukowski: a tribute night

Charles Bukowski was one of the most influential American authors of the second half of the twentieth century. His honest
and sometimes shocking portrayal of everyday life remains popular. In novels such as Post Office and Factotum, and in
his prolific poetry, he chronicles the lives and language of ordinary Americans. This event pays tribute to Bukowski.
Readings and discussion of his work will be presented alongside works inspired by his writing.

Over the years, the Centre for Open Studies has produced many notable, award-winning and widely published writers. These writers have enhanced the reputation of the Centre. Each year, new and returning students produce excellent work during their time at the Centre.
This event showcases work written by students during the term. Students will read stories, extracts from novels and
other fiction forms at this special event that will also include music, visual art and refreshments.
