Rebel Cinema: ‘Z’ directed by Costa-Gavras March, 11, 2015
Wednesday March 11 at The Briggait
A night of rebel cinema and music, raising money for Rock Around the Blockade’s solidarity brigade to revolutionary Cuba.
REBEL CINEMA: ‘Z’ (1967) dir. COSTA-GAVRAS
Greece is seething. A prominent left-wing politician and doctor is attacked amid a violent demonstration. The military and government are determined to cover up the truth…A “pulse-pounding political thriller” and “one of the most vital dispatches of 1960s filmmaking”, this 1967 masterpiece from the radical Greek expatriate director Costa-Gavras is more relevant than ever. As the Greek people once more rise up against austerity and financial dictatorship, this is not to be missed!
OPEN MIC – “THIS GUITAR KILLS FASCISTS!”
Rebel Cinema’s open mic nights are building up, with some great performances over the last two events. Everyone is welcome to come down and get up, guitars, kazoos and tonsils at the ready. We want to hear your songs, your poems, your howls and shouts…This is a time of struggle, and there’s gotta be some sounds to go with it! So there’ll be a good glug or two of rum for everyone who comes down with something new to shake us up.
The great Ewan MacColl – folksinger, songwriter, communist, activist and poet – was born 100 years ago this year, and as the man said:
“My function is not to reassure people. I want to make them uncomfortable. To send them out of the place arguing and talking.”
