This panel brings together two contemporary authors from the Caribbean with a Scots Gaelic author, whose short stories all stem from a place of rich multilingual traditions. The authors’ relationship to language and literary inheritance will raise questions about the choices and responsibilities facing them. Is work from ‘lesser heard’ communities translatable in current market conditions? How and for whom do they speak, and why?

The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games provides a unique opportunity for Scotland to explore its cultural heritage with the wider Commonwealth. Glasgow’s Mitchell Library hosts a vast collection of original archival material relating to Scotland’s shared history with the Caribbean, forged in many ways in the 1750s by the North Atlantic Slave Trade.

Comhairle nan Leabhraichean | The Gaelic Books Council In partnership with the British Council, the Mitchell Library and a Caribbean partner will invite two Caribbean writers of historical fiction to come to Glasgow for the Aye Write! Festival, as part of a four week residency programme. Both writers will explore the archival material in new and creative ways and take part in Aye Write!’s extensive outreach programme, talking to the public about how they work with archives and how they explore their contemporary relationship with history. In return a Scottish writer will be invited to take part in a similar exchange programme in the Caribbean exploring archival material held in the region.’
