One of the highlights of our summer was a trip through to the Edinburgh Film Festival to see the premier of 'Good Dick', the fantastic film by Marianna Palka. Glasgow girl, Marianna not only wrote the script but also directed and starred in the movie.

Our expectations were pretty high as we made our way by coach from Glasgow to Edinburgh with a high-spirited gang of Marianna's family and friends. We were not to be disappointed, the film was amazing and Polish hospitality was to the fore on the excursion. We were treated to sandwiches and sparkling wine on the journey then when we arrived in Edinburgh we met up with the Californian contingent in a pub, where further celebrations ensued. We were joined by Jason Ritter, who co-stars in the film, Jason's mum and the young producers of the film Jennifer Dubin and Cora Olson plus friends from other far flung places.

After a few drinks we headed off to The Cameo Film Theatre to catch the premier:

The first thing you can say about 'Good Dick' is that it really is an exceptional film and it's no surprise that it has attracted so many accolades including awards at Sundance and Edinburgh Film Festivals. Good Dick was in dramatic competition at Sundance and Marianna picked up an award then went on to achieve Best New Director at the Edinburgh Film Festival. So success on both sides of the Atlantic.

It's an unusual and powerful modern day love story - both poignant and powerful. Not to be missed and I'm aiming to go along again in October when the film will go on release throughout the UK.

Reviews of Good Dick

Photo: good dick jason. Reviews of the film have been most impressive.

Rare is the film that can actually take a burgeoning relationship seriously and still possess enough charm to make us smile and laugh through the rough patches. Debuting writer/director Marianna Palka has done just that with a film whose title is more than just an easy punchline for habitual jokesters and prudes without the foresight to look past it. Like love itself, once they accept it, they will be treated to a unique, fulfilling experience that is as strange as it is beautiful.

Good Dick is a strangely appealing little tale of two "weirdos," but it also manages to shine a light on the fears and insecurities than even the "normalest" people face. And that's a pretty impressive feat. Especially for a first-time filmmaker.

We'll be looking forward to another great day out with Basia, John and the rest of Marianna's family when the film comes to Glasgow in October.
