A Christmas Poem – The Forgotten by Margaret Harrison

(Margaret Harrison, Freewoman of Dumbarton, life-long peace campaigner and activist for human rights. A remarkable woman who, at the age of 95, has not lost hope of world peace. Whilst acknowledging and respecting opposing viewpoints she has never swerved in her convictions or in working to achieve peace through non-violent protest.)

The Forgotten

They used to be in hospital

With nurses and with doctors too

Now they wander aimlessly

With nothing much to do

To put them out was not the way

For it failed to provide

A proper place to live

When they were sent outside

We see them as they wander by

Just getting through the day

Many wish that they were back

With a proper place to stay

We take them in at Christmas

Feed and keep them warm

Then we put them out again

To face the cold and storm

If only it was Christmas

For them all the year

They could hold on a while

To all that Christmas cheer

After being warm and dry

And fed by those who care

Back sleeping in a cardboard box

Doesn’t seem quite fair

They sit around in tearooms

Or stations for the heat

Our system it has failed them

And left them on the street
