Sweet Charity, Websters Theatre
30 April – 2 May, 2020
Websters Theatre, 415 Great Western Road, G3 9HZ
Green Door Theatre is a Glasgow-based performing arts company. After receiving rave audience reviews for their debut production of Sondheim’s Assassins in April 2019, they are thrilled to return to Websters Theatre in 2020 with Bob Fosse’s rarely-performed 60s classic Sweet Charity.
Charity Hope Valentine is a taxi dancer in a Times Square dancehall, and while her friends dream of getting out of that life for good, all Charity really wants is love. She’s headstrong, quirky, flirtatious, genuine, witty, and has disastrous taste in men. When her boyfriend Charlie (whose name is on her tattoo) shoves her into a pond and runs, Charity finds herself on a series of misadventures on the road to loving herself, even if it takes a movie star, a cult leader, a claustrophobe, and her friends to get her there.
Sweet Charity premiered on Broadway in 1966 with Bob Fosse at the helm, and it feels somewhat like you’re watching a 60s Manhattan fairytale. The combination of music and choreography is iconic, featuring standout numbers like ‘Hey, Big Spender’, ‘The Rhythm of Life’, and ‘Rich Man’s Frug’. With any luck, you might just leave the theatre with a spring in your step and a tiny glint of optimism in your eye – and what could be more needed these days than a classic slice of musical theatre escapism?
