Glasgow Youth Film Festival celebrates 10^th Anniversary with exciting new creative and Scottish production Anna and the Apocalypse  at Opening Gala

One of the most innovative youth film festivals in Europe, Glasgow Youth Film Festival (GYFF) returns from 14 – 16 September 2018, celebrating both its 10^th anniversary edition and Scotland’s Year of Young People. Programmed by GYFF Young Programmers aged 15 -19, who are mentored on a year round basis, the festival presents an outstanding range of international films and creative workshops for young people across the city.

2018 is Scotland’s first ever Year of Young People, celebrating young people’s talents, contributions and creating new opportunities across Scotland for them to shine. The Year of Young People 2018 is a programme of events and activities that will give them the opportunity to show the world what they are made of.

GYFF Young Programmers are currently in the midst of GYFF Summer School – working closely with the team at Glasgow Film to put together an exciting festival for their peers. Young Programmer, Kasey Ditton, said, “I’m enjoying hearing from people at the GFT and learning from them. Watching new films and meeting new people has been fun!”

The Young Programmers will enjoy a master-class on film criticism with GYFF Festival Media Partner The Skinny magazine’s Film Editor Jamie Dunn; alongside workshops on programming, marketing, short film, pop-up cinema programming and much more, including exploring the brand new GYFF Creative, designed by young designer Fiona Hunter. Hunter explains the creative, developed with input from the Young Programmers: “GYFF is all about collaboration and variety. We wanted to create an identity that reflected the many voices and elements that shape this festival.”

Much of the programme remains tightly under wraps until Wednesday 15 August, but GYFF is delighted to announce the Opening Gala: Scottish-based production Anna and the Apocalypse. The thrilling zombie musical will enjoy a home-town screening at GFT on Friday 14 September, followed by a Q&A with some of the cast and crew.

Glasgow based director John McPhail attended Glasgow Film Festival in 2016, for two sold out screenings of his debut directorial feature Where Do We Go From Here?. Fresh from celebrated film festival screenings around the world, Anna and the Apocalypse is a gleeful zombie apocalypse musical mash-up, director McPhail commented: “I’m so pleased that the Glasgow Youth Film Festival team have chosen to programme Anna and the Apocalypse – it really means a lot to me. I’m a Glasgow boy, and remember sitting in GFT watching all these amazing films, inspired to make my own – I hope young aspiring filmmakers watch this and know it is possible to make any film, even horror zombie musicals if they want!”

Tickets for Opening Gala: Anna and the Apocalypse will go on sale Wednesday 1 August at 12noon, from GFT Box Office and glasgowfilm.org/gyff
