Take 2: The Wizard of Oz at GFT

Dorothy Gale dreams of a land “somewhere over the rainbow” and, after a tornado rages through her hometown, her dream comes true. Joined by her dog and a band of unlikely friends, Dorothy sets out to find the enigmatic Wizard of Oz.

This much-loved cinema classic was released in the same year that Cosmo Cinema (now Glasgow Film Theatre) opened on Rose Street. The cinema was Scotland’s first arts cinema and only the second purpose-built arthouse cinema in Britain, after the Curzon Mayfair in London. Opened on 18 May 1939, it was also the last cinema to be built in Glasgow before the outbreak of the Second World War.

This screening is part of Sitting with the Stars, organised by the Sauchiehall Street: Culture and Heritage District, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund’s Heritage Places. Sitting with the Stars is a programme of talks, screenings and activity which invites audiences to step into Glasgow’s social history as a ‘Cinema City’ during the early 20th century – a time when the city had over 130 cinemas, and more cinema seats and picture houses per head than any other city in the world.

Every child attending a Take 2 screening receives a free ticket for themselves and one free ticket for their accompanying adult. Free tickets are only issued on the day of the screening.
