Glasgow Cinema: Joe, GFT, 25 July – Thursday 7 August
Joe
GFT, 12 Rose Street
Friday 25 July – Thursday 7 August
Joe is a rugged, no-nonsense man of quiet intensity, a good soul with an unfortunate propensity towards alcohol and violence. Based on the novel by Larry Brown and directed by David Gordon Green (continuing his exploration of wounded masculinity following last year’s Prince Avalanche), this is a film about the underside of Americana – a land both ugly and beautiful, which Nicholas Cage’s Joe fully embodies. One day, a fifteen-year-old drifter named Gary (Tree of Life’s Tye Sheridan) shows up looking for work and soon Joe finds himself looking after the damaged youth. A tough, gripping and often agonising portrayal of masculinity, featuring one of Cage’s best performances.
Available to stream on the GFT Player for £7.99 from Friday 25 July.
