This immensely powerful Palme d’Or winner from director Jacques Audiard (Rust and Bone) couldn’t be more topical or involving. Ex-Tamil Tiger Dheepan, played by real life former-Tiger child soldier Antonythasan Jesuthasan, flees Sri Lanka for Thailand and then France, having created a fake family with fellow lost souls Yalini (Kalieaswari Srinivasan) and nine-year-old Illayaal (Claudine Vinasithamby) to win the sympathy of the authorities. They find themselves washed up on a Parisian housing project, a wild frontier place of drug-dealing, gun-toting gangs and ordinary people trying to survive with dignity, where all three discover that the past is never easy to escape.
Specially commissioned programme notes will be available.
