Music, Religion & Uprising: Focus on Ricardo Bacallao + Q & A
Friday 11 November, 5.30 – 7.50 p.m.

Dir. Ricardo Bacallao
Ricardo Bacallao is a Cuban film director and founder of the Black Cuba series based in Berlin and New York. He studied directing for film, radio, and television at the Universidad de las Artes in Cuba and obtained his Master of Fine Art from the University of New York. His documentaries primarily focus on the Cuban community in Berlin – specifically looking at religion and music.
“When I was living in Cuba, I never thought I belonged to any Diaspora. It was only when I started living in Germany. In Germany, if there’s another Black person [on the street], he says hello to you, greeting you. This was something very weird to me. I said to myself, ‘Why?’ I realized at that moment that I belonged to a community, the Black Diaspora.” – Bacallao in an interview with All Cuba Blog
