Widely regarded as Tarkovsky’s finest film, this ambitious historical drama focuses on the life of the great icon painter Andrei Rublev. During a tumultuous period in 15th century Russia, Rublev drifts from place to place, gaining a reputation for his art. After unintentionally becoming involved in a battle he gives up his work. However, as he begins to overcome his troubles he returns to life as a painter. Working on an epic scale, Tarkovsky expertly portrays the brutality of the time from which Rublev’s serene art arose.
