“The Hangman”
This one-off single release is based on Maurice Ogden’s 1950 poem of the same name. Perceived by many as being a commentary on the rise of Fascism in Europe, it also alluded to events much closer to home for Ogden with the rise of McCarthyism in the USA.
Updated by Nick Turner and Damaged Goodz with a chorus for our own generation. “No Pasarán” (They Shall Not Pass), the iconic slogan of the Spanish Civil War, has continued to the present day as a rallying cry against Fascism.
The YouTube video is a recut of the original 1964 film animation by Margaret Julian, directed by Les Goldman and Paul Julian, and which originally featured music by American composer Serge Hovey.
The single is available for download at all the usual joints.
