The Quiet American
Saturday 21 – Thursday 25 September, 2024
This adaptation of the seminal Graham Greene novel is set in 1950s Saigon, as it struggles to emerge from colonial rule. Cynical British journalist Fowler (Michael Caine) falls in love with a young Vietnamese woman but is dismayed when a naïve US official also begins vying for her attention. In retaliation, Fowler informs the communists that the American is selling arms to their enemy.
Composer Craig Armstrong undertook hours of absorption in the traditional music of Vietnam to come up with music that fitted both time and place. The score went on to win both Ivor Novello and American Film Institute awards.
Screening as part of CineMasters: Craig Armstrong season in partnership with Sonica.
