Restored from the original nitrate negative in 4K, Andrew Pushkin’s short story was given a darkly fantastical and wholly surreal adaptation in Thorold Dickinson’s late 1940s retelling.
Set in 1806 in St Petersburg, The Queen Of Spades stars Anton Walbrook as Herman Suvorin, a poor Captain of Engineers who watches huge fortunes being lost and won every day as gambling fever tightens its grip on the city. He doesn’t dare risk losing the money he’s so carefully saved from his pay over the years, so instead he seeks the help of the Countess Ranevskaya (Edith Evans) who, by selling her soul many years before, obtained the secret of winning at cards.
